I was talking with a friend the other day about something many business owners struggle with: how to run a full-time business, take care of family, and still protect your peace of mind.
We also talked about client communication and boundaries, and how a few simple habits can make everything feel more manageable.
Here are a few things that have worked well for me:
1. Set Your Own Hours
Just because a client emails me at night or on the weekend doesn’t mean I have to respond immediately. I get to decide when I work.
And honestly, I don’t get upset when clients email outside my business hours. Usually, it just means they’re getting things done, and I’m grateful they’re keeping my queue moving.
2. Use Technology to Your Advantage
If I happen to work in the evening or over the weekend, I’ll often schedule my emails to send later.
That way, I can stay productive without creating the expectation that I’m always available. Tools like Gmail’s scheduled send feature make this incredibly easy.
3. Set Expectations Early
When I start working with a new client, I explain my communication style upfront.
I let them know I’m typically at my desk between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM EST, and that I respond to emails within 24 hours.
Of course, there are seasons when early mornings or late nights happen. But I never want constant urgency to become the norm.
The result?
My clients know what to expect, projects run smoothly, and I still have time for the people and moments that matter most.
Building a business shouldn’t require being available 24/7. Healthy boundaries don’t weaken client relationships. In many cases, they make them stronger.
What’s one boundary or communication habit that’s helped you create a healthier work-life balance?
