Sitting Still Isn’t A Growth Strategy

AARP August 2025

Five years ago, I sat down with a notebook and an idea: Could I really build a business as a Virtual Assistant? Fast-forward to today, and Wrennovate is not just a dream—it’s a growing business built with long nights, early mornings, and lots of heart.

But in the process of building momentum, I let something else slide: my movement.

I used to walk daily, hit the treadmill on rainy days, even do yoga on the porch. These days, that time is spent researching tech tools for my clients, troubleshooting systems, or squeezing in “just one more” afternoon meeting. You know the drill—business growth is exciting… but exhausting. I even bought a walking pad for under my desk, thinking it would inspire me to move more during the day—because I knew I needed to make movement a priority. But the friction of pulling it in and out between client meetings (that always seem to multiply) turned that great idea into something I’d ‘get to later.’ Now it’s packed away behind gift boxes, wrapping paper, and craft supplies I also plan to get to… some day which I’m convinced is the 8th day of the week the Beatles wrote about.

So when I was flipping through the August issue of AARP Magazine—yes, AARP, because I just turned 53 last week and apparently, this is who I am now—I stumbled across a little reminder: “For every 30 minutes of sitting, take a light, three-minute walk.”

Call it a not-so-subtle reminder from AARP that sitting still isn’t a growth strategy.

I realized that movement isn’t just physical—it’s also about momentum in business. And both start with small, consistent action.

And that’s when it hit me.

It’s the same thing I see with my clients. They invest in the best software, hire the right support (me), plan for consistency—and then life happens. The new system doesn’t get used. The course doesn’t get finished. The dream gets delayed. Not because it wasn’t a good idea, but because we didn’t make room to follow through.

So here’s what I’m doing: for every 30 minutes I sit, I’m taking 3 minutes to move. Not a workout. Just a walk. A stretch. A reset. Maybe I’ll take a lap around the kitchen (yes, it counts!), jot down a quick idea for content, or spend 3 minutes breathing and mentally resetting before the next Zoom call. And I’m inviting you to try it too. Let’s find out just how much momentum we can create—in business, in health, in life—3 minutes at a time.
