Burnout-Proofing Your Remote Career

As a virtual assistant, it’s easy to feel like the workday never ends

As a virtual assistant, it’s easy to feel like the workday never ends. Emails ping late into the night, one more task always calls, and before you know it, you’re running on empty. Sound familiar? Learning to unplug seemed impossible to me—until I discovered the Shut-Down Ritual. This simple yet life-changing practice helped me reclaim my evenings, recharge my energy, and restore balance to my life.

However, as Anne Lamott so aptly put it, “Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you.” Neglecting to disconnect and recharge had taken a toll on my productivity, creativity, and ability to fully engage in my personal life. Something had to change.

Enter the Shut-Down Ritual, a concept from Cal Newport’s influential book Deep Work. This daily practice of intentionally ending the workday became my lifeline to create boundaries, prevent burnout, and thrive in both my professional and personal life.

Implementing a Shut-Down Ritual: My Personal Journey

At first, I resisted the idea of stepping away. For months, I worked well past dinner, answering emails from the couch and feeling like I was always “on.” Burnout was inevitable. But with trial and error, I found a rhythm that worked for me. Here’s how I made the Shut-Down Ritual part of my routine:

1. Create a Clear Divide

I set up a dedicated office space in my home. This physical separation between work and personal life is key. When I leave my office, my brain knows it’s time to unwind. No more laptops on the dining table or answering emails from bed.

2. Close the Loops

At the end of each workday, I spend 30 minutes reviewing what I’ve accomplished and jotting down a plan for tomorrow. This mental “unloading” helps me avoid carrying unfinished tasks into my personal time.

3. Signal the Shift

Shutting down my computer, flipping my desk sign to CLOSED, and walking away physically are small actions with a big impact. These rituals tell me—and my brain—that it’s time to transition into personal mode.

4. Engage in a Reset Activity

My go-to reset activity is taking my furbabies, Donald and Bivie, for a walk. The fresh air and their wagging tails help me shake off the workday and refocus on being present.

5. Designate No-Work Zones

This was the hardest step for me, but it’s been a significant change. I’ve made my family room and dinner table tech-free zones. These boundaries ensure that I’m truly unplugged and connected with the people I love.

The Benefits of a Consistent Shut-Down Ritual

Since implementing this ritual, the difference has been remarkable. Here’s what I’ve gained:

Increased Productivity

By creating clear boundaries between work and personal time, I’ve become more focused and efficient during work hours.

Enhanced Creativity and Problem-Solving

Giving my mind a chance to rest and recharge allows me to tackle challenges with fresh energy and think outside the box.

Improved Relationships

Being fully present during personal time has strengthened my connections with family and friends—essential sources of support and inspiration.

Renewed Energy and Passion

Prioritizing self-care has helped me approach my work with a renewed sense of enthusiasm and purpose.

Take the Leap: Try the Shut-Down Ritual

As a remote virtual assistant, mastering the art of disconnecting has been a significant change for me. By implementing a consistent Shut-Down Ritual, I’ve fostered a healthier work-life balance, increased my productivity, and rediscovered joy in both my personal and professional life.
